How would you like to attend book club discussions hosted by some of the world’s most influential leaders and celebrities?

Literati, an online book club subscription service, lets you get pretty close by allowing you to join the virtual book clubs of leaders like Richard Branson, Malala, and Stephen Curry.

In this post, we’ll explain how Literati works and what features it offers so you can decide if this book club subscription is worth it for you.

How Does the Literati Book Club Work?

Each month, one of Literati’s 13 “Luminaries” chooses a book for members to read. Subscribers can choose which Luminary’s virtual book club they want to join each month, and can access the discussions for all 13 clubs.

Pricing

One thing that makes Literati different from other book subscription services is that readers do not have to get the book of the month through Literati.

Subscribers have the option of acquiring the month’s book on their own, which they might get from their library or from a retailer of their choice. This option costs $8.25/month when you prepay for 12 months.

Alternatively, members can have the book conveniently shipped to them each month. This option costs $25/month, or $20/month if you prepay for 12 months.

Currently, Literati partners with the following Luminaries:

  • Megan Rapinoe
  • Joseph Campbell
  • Austin Kleon
  • Richard Branson
  • Susan Orlean
  • Malala
  • Cheryl Strayed
  • Stephen Curry
  • Roxane Gay
  • Jesmyn Ward
  • Kelly McGonigal
  • Elin Hilderbrand
  • Atlas Obscura

What Subscribers Get

Every Literati subscription comes with the following perks, regardless of whether you pay to have the book delivered or obtain them on your own.

  • Access to all 13 clubs: See the month’s picks for each club and access their discussions.
  • New recommendations each month: In the middle of each month, books for the next month are announced, so readers can change their primary book club each month if they want to.
  • Discussions: Access and participate in thoughtful in-app discussions with other readers.
  • Author Q&As: Get exclusive invitations to Q&A sessions with featured authors.
  • Exclusive content: When you sign up to have books delivered, you’ll receive printed content with each month’s pick, including a bookmark, a note from your Luminary, and a catalog of all the month’s selections.

Although you can only get one book delivered per month, you can still access the discussions for all 12 of the other clubs. This also applies if you choose to get the book on your own.

Literati for Kids

In addition to its book clubs for adults, Literati is also known for its book subscription boxes for kids. These function a lot like other subscription boxes, such as Stitch Fix.

For a monthly fee of $9.95, parents will receive five books curated based on your child’s age and a specific theme.

Parents can purchase the ones their kids love and return the rest in the enclosed prepaid mailer (shipping is free both ways). Each individual book is matched to its Amazon price. Learn more about Literati for kids.

Who Owns Literati Book Club?

Jessica Ewing is the founder and CEO of Literati. After working for Google, Ewing moved to Hawaii to work on her first novel.

Upon finishing her book, Ewing pitched numerous variations of ideas to investors, including a platform designed to connect writers with publishers and agents. She eventually decided to narrow her focus to children’s books, which is how Literati was born.

The site was originally focused on children’s book subscription boxes, but now includes the book club subscriptions that we’ve focused on in this post.

Is Literati Worth It?

A Literati book club subscription could definitely be worth if for you if:

  • You are looking for an engaging book club where you can interact with other readers in online discussions.
  • You are interested in receiving recommendations by influential people.
  • You like reading books from diverse perspectives.

If you don’t plan to engage in discussions, if you aren’t interested in the Luminaries and the genres they typically choose, or if you are looking to receive discounted books, then a Literati subscription likely won’t be worth the cost to you.

You can check out the list of Luminaries and some of their past selections to see if you might be interested in the books Literati typically features.

One of Literati’s main selling points is its book club discussions with Luminaries and other members. If you don’t care about that, it’s probably more convenient to just buy the books yourself, since you’re not getting a discount on the books through Literati.
