What Is a Hashtag?

A hashtag is simply a word or phrase that’s preceded by the pound, or “hash”, symbol (#). It was already used in information technology for highlighting certain texts but only entered the public’s perception when Twitter began using it to categorize tweets by their topics.

It became so popular that other social media platforms such as Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram have adopted its use. TikTok, the internet’s newest contender for the most popular social media platform, also uses it to make its database of videos more user-friendly.

In 2007, blogger Chris Messina first proposed its use on Twitter to tag topics on the site. But while Twitter first called it “a thing for nerds,” they swiftly changed their tune after seeing its usefulness.

Following a fire that occurred in San Diego County later that year, users began using hashtags such as #sandiegofire to easily keep track of the latest news surrounding the tragedy.

Today, people use the hashtag to categorize their content and make it more visible to others. Including a hashtag signals the algorithm that your post relates to a certain topic. The algorithm will then index it into the appropriate category.

For example, if you are publishing a post about the upcoming 2024 Olympics, you might use the hashtag #2024olympics. Someone who’s interested in this topic might type in #2024olympics on the search bar or click on the hashtag from another post.

They’ll be shown every piece of content that’s ever used the hashtag. While it’s no guarantee that they’ll see or click on your post, what’s important is that it appears and there’s a possibility for them to check it out.

Can You Just Make Up a Hashtag?

People create their own hashtags all the time, especially if it’s for a new or extremely niche subject. If you can’t find a suitable hashtag for your post, feel free to make your own. Here are a few things you need to consider though:

  • Always start your hashtag with the hash symbol. A hashtag with no hash symbol is merely a phrase. Also, avoid using spaces or any other symbols in your hashtag as the algorithm won’t accept it.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Because you can’t use spaces, the longer your hashtag is, the harder it is to read. Imagine having to read a hashtag about IKEA that spells out its complete meaning, “#IngvarKampradElmtarydAgunnaryd,” rather than just using “#IKEA”.
  • Limit how many hashtags you use. Not only does your post look cluttered, but it also looks spammy. Most marketers recommend only using 2-3 hashtags per post.
  • Include the most relevant words to your hashtag. If they’re too obscure, people are less likely to discover or search for them.

What Are the Benefits of Hashtags?

Using hashtags on your posts means they’re more likely to be discovered by others. Think of social media as a conversation happening between thousands and thousands of people. It’s easy for your voice to be lost in that babble of voices. With hashtags, you’re making your voice more noticeable so people are more likely to hear you.

And because your content is easier to find, this can lead to better engagement, strengthening your presence on the platform through more comments, likes, reactions, followers, and shares.

As you grow that presence, it becomes easier for you to market yourself and your works. You become more legitimate in people’s eyes, and you’ll start to create a stronger connection between you and your audience.
